Subterranean Termites

Subterranean Termites are very active in the springtime, and they are similar to ants and bees when it comes to how they function. They have what is called a "working order" that includes reproducing, workers, and more solid subterranean termites. The Subterranean termites enjoy eating wood and perform very well in moist and humid environments.

These termites can multiply rapidly, and the queen termite lays on average a thousand eggs a day. The termites and eggs that hatch can destroy a building within a day without any interference.

How Do I Know If I Have Them?

The easiest and most common signs that you may have Subterranean termites is seeing them in swarms or finding their wings around the house. Another sign of an infestation is having hollow walls. When the termites are going to work inside your home, they normally find a home between your walls. Your walls become weaker the longer these termites go untreated. Your walls will be hollow, or papery, and thin-looking.

How Can I Prevent Them?

The best way to prevent these termites from entering your home is to keep your home dry and get it inspected regularly. Gutters and water drains need to be functioning correctly to keep moisture around and near your home to a minimum. This also includes performing any repairs to water pipes throughout your home so that there aren't any water leaks.

Formosan Termites

Formosan Termites are very similar to Subterranean Termites. They love and thrive in humid and moist environments. They also have a working order or caste system that consists of reproducers, workers, and soldiers. Their queens lay thousands of eggs weekly, allowing these termites to grow quickly and destroy wood quickly. On top of that, Formosan termites have an orange, yellowish color, while the Subterranean termites are more of a brown and bronze.

The most noticeable difference between the Formosan and Subterranean termites is their appearance. Formosan termites have short pinchers and are longer compared to the Subterranean termite who is the exact opposite.

You can find this species of termite in the southern states of the country. Louisiana is known to have Formosan termites due to hurricanes, humidity, and rainfall.

Are They Dangerous?

Another notable thing about Formosan termites is that they are persistent and are willing to defend their new homes. They build nests to collect moisture and reside in them instead of going back to the soil like their Subterranean cousins.
